Virgin Australia Compostable Cutlery Pack

The challenge

Virgin Australia is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and has partnered with Global-C to develop a 100% compostable cutlery pack. The pack is given to economy class passengers for its inflight meal services.

The pack contains:

  • crystalised polylactic acid (CPLA) fork, knife and spoon
  • bamboo fibre napkin
  • polylactic acid (PLA) lined salt/pepper twinpack
  • PLA wrapping film

The results

Unlike traditional polystyrene and polypropylene materials, this pack offers sustainable end of life disposal options. When incinerated, no toxic substances are generated and it emits less than half of CO2 that an equivalent traditional plastic cutlery would produce. PLA and CPLA begin breaking down into a low-molecular weight polymer, in natural landfill environments, after 5-6 months. They completely decompose after 3 to 5 years, depending on the environment. The pack is commercially compostable in 2 months.

The CPLA cutlery pack is one of several sustainable product initiatives from Global-C.
