The challenge

The global travel sector was hit by COVID-19 pandemic at the end of Q1 2020. Shelter in place orders, international travel restrictions and limited knowledge on the transmission of the virus all but ground travel to a halt. Airlines were forced to rethink how the passenger experience would need to change to address the COVID-19 threat.

Knowing that demand for our traditional product range would drop dramatically, we sought to develop a new portfolio of hygiene products that we believed our customers would need when they resumed their flight schedules. Compounding the problem was the fact that many countries limited or regulated the export of medical and hygiene products in order to increase domestic stock piles

The solution

Global C identified a range of personal protection equipment that airlines would require when flights resumed. We developed products such as face masks, hand sanitisers and antibacterial wipes with manufacturers in multiple locations; we applied for product registrations; we built in-house knowledge on transportation and export/import of regulated PPE categories; and we found solutions to package these products in ways that airlines could easily distribute them to their passengers. Establishment of packing lines in Turkey and the USA enabled us to get packs to our customers quicker than those who sourced in China and were hampered by onerous export regulations.

The results

In less than three months, Global C was able to supply personal protection packs as well as individual products to several of its airlines customers including British Airways, Finnair, JetBlue, KLM and Qantas.

We continue to develop products that address the evolving needs of our airline customers during the pandemic.
